At Orbit Dental, our team is dedicated to helping patients enjoy the best dental health possible. Sometimes, reaching that goal requires that we replace a missing tooth with a dental implant in Garland. Even a single missing tooth can lead to significant oral health problems (such as dental drift and further tooth loss), so we encourage anyone who has an incomplete smile to visit us for a restorative consultation right away. It may not be long before you are once again the proud owner of a complete, confident, and gorgeous smile.

Single Tooth Replacement Options

Essentially, there are two ways in which we can replace a missing tooth. One popular option is a fixed bridge, sometimes referred to as crown and bridgework. In a fixed bridge, two crowns get placed over the teeth that are next to the gap (the abutment teeth). The crowns support an artificial tooth between them. While a fixed bridge is sturdy and can restore full dental function, it does come with a few disadvantages. For example, placing one requires that we file down the abutment teeth, removing healthy enamel. Plus, the bridge only replaces the visible portion of the missing tooth. It does nothing to replace the lost tooth root.

A single tooth dental implant in Garland, on the other hand, is a self-supporting tooth replacement option. A dental implant is a small titanium cylinder that gets placed below the gum line; it replaces the tooth root. We attach a custom crown to the top of the implant to replace the rest of the tooth.

How Single Tooth Implants Work

If you choose to replace your missing tooth with a dental implant, your dentist in Garland will first have to make sure you have adequate bone structure to support the implant. If you do, and there are no other issues that might affect your candidacy for the procedure, you’ll undergo a minimally invasive procedure wherein the implant will be inserted beneath your gum line.

The implant will need time to bond with the surrounding tissue, a process that may take several months. Then, we’ll design and place the crown to finish repairing your smile.

Benefits of Single Tooth Implants

Single tooth implants offer a number of outstanding benefits:

  • The implant stimulates the jawbone, helping to keep it strong and dense.
  • An implant looks and feels like a natural tooth. Onlookers may have no idea that you were ever missing a tooth!
  • A dental implant has the potential to last for a lifetime. The crown on top of it may last for a decade or longer.
  • Caring for a dental implant is simple. As long as you’re diligent about oral hygiene and attend regular checkups with your dentist, it’s unlikely that you’ll encounter any problems with your new tooth.
  • An implant can protect your remaining natural teeth. Placing a dental implant doesn’t usually require that the adjacent teeth be modified or extracted.
