Dental Crowns

A dental crown consists of a tooth-shaped structure that is placed at the location of a lost or damaged tooth to restore its appearance and function. Patients receive dental crowns for many reasons, such as:

  • Protecting damaged or weakened teeth
  • Root canal treatment
  • Improving tooth function
  • Appearance adjustments
  • Correcting misshapen teeth

Because dental crowns are custom built using impressions of the patient’s teeth, two visits are typically required to receive a crown. The first visit includes preparing the tooth and taking impressions, while the second visit involves applying the dental crown to the tooth.

Dental Bridges

Dental bridges, also known as partial dentures, are used when a patient is missing multiple teeth. They are comprised of natural-looking artificial teeth that are held in place using support provided by natural teeth that are still present inside the mouth. A dental bridge can either be removable or permanently attached inside the mouth depending upon its type.

Permanently attached bridges, also called fixed bridges, are secured using one of two methods. A permanent dental bridge can be either be directly bonded to the adjacent supporting teeth, or it can be applied on top of supporting structures (implants), essentially making it a series of dental crowns. Removable bridges are held in place using metal clasps or precision attachments. These securing devices are designed to keep a removable bridge steady, even when the user is talking or eating. Unlike fixed bridges, removable bridges can be taken out of the mouth by the user for easy cleaning and then quickly reinserted.
