How Dental Insurance Works

Dental insurance places its focus on preventive care. When choosing to invest in this type of insurance program, you recognize that being proactive about your oral health will allow you to save more than waiting until a problem occurs. While each plan is different, most maintain the primary focus of giving patients the most savings when receiving preventive services like dental checkups and cleanings, digital X-rays, and more.

By choosing to be proactive about oral health, you can expect to enjoy better oral health year-round and avoid more serious problems that require invasive and often costly restorative care. While dental insurance does cover more extensive procedures like dental crowns, fillings, root canals, and tooth extractions, they only agree to pay a portion of the total cost. And you are required to have met your deductible and have remaining funds available as part of your annual maximum.

One component of dentistry you will not find included as part of your available coverage is cosmetic dentistry. Because these services are deemed “elective,” they are not considered medically necessary, so dental insurance companies will not pay for them.

What is the Difference Between Dental and Medical Insurance?

It’s easy to assume that dental and medical insurance are the same, but they are vastly different. While medical insurance focuses more on offering greater savings once a problem has occurred (i.e., diagnostic labs, hospitalizations, specialist visits, etc.), dental insurance is designed to benefit patients by being proactive about oral health.

With worsening dental problems come costly treatments, and your dental insurance company doesn’t want to have to pay those prices. This is why you’ll frequently find that most offer 100% coverage for preventive care. By keeping your twice-yearly appointments, you’ll reduce your chances of developing dental decay, gum disease, oral cancer, and other serious problems. As a result, your dental insurance company will avoid paying more for restorative services, which are typically much more expensive.

In-Network vs. Out of Network

In-network versus out-of-network verbiage can often be confusing for many patients. Trying to decipher what these mean and how they benefit you can require meeting with a member of your dental team before your first visit. At Orbit Dental, we are pleased to have a team of experts who understand dental insurance and will be happy to explain.

Out of Network

However, there is no clause stating that you must see an in-network dentist. If we are not in-network with your dental insurance company, you can still expect to receive the same high-quality service. There is one caveat, though. Because we will be out of network with your dental insurance company, you will be required to pay more on the day of your treatment. But you can expect us to file any necessary paperwork with your dental insurance company to help you get the maximum reimbursement.
